Award-winning local charity SafeWise celebrated the work, commitment and achievements of its dedicated volunteers this week – with help from bus operator Damory.
The bus operator – which provided transport on a special trip out to Beaulieu National Motor Museum – supports SafeWise as its good cause for 2016.
It also provides significantly discounted rates to local schools travelling to the initiative’s interactive safety centres in Bournemouth and Weymouth – which are designed to reduce the chance of accidents among children on the roads, in the home and at play.
“SafeWise is a multi-agency partnership involving councils, emergency services, local businesses and other voluntary organisations – and it does wonderful work, bringing potentially life-saving education to thousands of Dorset schoolchildren,” said Damory area manager, Adam Keen.
“We work closely with the charity to transport as many young people as possible to the SafeWise centre in Weymouth and its sister site in Bournemouth. So helping to treat its team of volunteers to a very well-deserved day out in Beaulieu was an absolute pleasure.”
Alison Shelton, chief executive of SafeWise, said: “Damory’s support, with some massively reduced transport prices, is invaluable as it helps to remove the biggest barrier to attendance at our safety centres – the cost of getting to us.
“We are also pleased to have been able to take our volunteers out for the day – thanks to extra support from Damory. I know everyone had a great time.”
SafeWise in Bournemouth has around 60 volunteers – and a team of 16 supports the activities at the SafeWise centre in Weymouth. “All our volunteers make a positive difference – even just giving us a couple of hours a week can save or make a difference to a life,” added Alison.
“They work in a number of roles. At SafeWise in Bournemouth we have ‘safety guides’ who show children around the specially-created indoor village, to help them learn how to identify and mitigate risks to stay safe. At SafeWise in Weymouth our volunteers provide administrative support, general assistance and catering assistance.”
Damory provides fixed rate coach hire to both sites for schools across the county:
- £95 from schools within eight miles of either centre
- £135 from schools within 15 miles of either centre
- £160 from schools within 25 miles of either centre
