Providing safety education in a hands on, safe and engaging environment is at the heart of what we do. We know from the feedback that we receive our recipe works and can positively influence behaviour. We are focused on equipping visitors to SafeWise with the knowledge and confidence to make informed decisions allowing them to take responsibility and, if necessary, know what to do if things go wrong.
Much of our work is focused on young people but we are also committed to working with groups across the whole community addressing the emerging needs as times change. An example of this is that we have worked in partnership with the police and older members of our communities to give them the confidence in dealing with persistent doorstep sellers. As times have changed we are now also tackling the growing issues of on line security with CyberWise. This knowledge can then be passed on to friends and family and the wider community.
At Bournemouth, general safety tours are available for key stages 1 and 2. At Weymouth, our safety education covers FireWise, RoadWise and HealthWise and is available for key stages 1, 2 and 3. Free visits are available for school years 2 and 5, these are subsidised by Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service – for these years schools will only have to fund travel. SafeWise have negotiated special discounts for all schools with Damory coaches, a Gold Sponsor of SafeWise. Click here to view details.
- Youth Groups
At Bournemouth, evening safety tours can be arranged for youth groups and uniformed organisations (cubs, brownies etc.). They are particularly suitable for children in key stages 1 and 2. At Weymouth, youth groups can receive our interactive, road safety education, RoadWise. Fire education can be arranged through organising a visit with Weymouth Fire Station.
- Post 16 year olds
At Bournemouth, Life Drive sessions are run on a regular basis for 17-25 year olds who wish to develop their driving skills and learn about common causes of accidents. At Weymouth, our post 16 education provides FireWise, NightWise and RoadWise. These sessions enable young people to stay safe in a variety of every day situations.
At Bournemouth, general information tours can be arranged for groups of adults who are interested in the work of the charity and who want to find out more about the centre. Weymouth offers a ‘Safer Homes’ package where we use the FireWise suite to educate organisations whose employees visit their own property portfolio; this could include housing associations, domiciliary nursing providers etc. Other adult community groups, such as WI or health support groups can also be provided with education that will keep them and others safe in their homes.
- Older People
At Bournemouth and Weymouth, older people’s tours can be arranged for groups of older people who are interested in finding out about ways to stay safe in old age.
Nightwise sessions are available at both centres, helping 15-17 year olds to learn how to stay safe on a night out as they become increasingly independent.
