Being on the board of a charity doesn’t normally involve taking on the monster task of running 26 miles.
But for Dorset County Council Chief Executive and SafeWise trustee Debbie Ward that’s exactly what she did! Debbie ran her first ever marathon this year – the LONDON MARATHON – in 4 hours 30 mins and 19 secs and we’re in awe!
Debbie sits on the board of SafeWise, which runs the SafeWise safety education centre in Weymouth and its counter-part LV=Streetwise in Bournemouth.
When the charity finally won a Silver Bond place in the London Marathon after applying several years ago, they needed a likely candidate to take up their guaranteed place. The bond scheme gives charities a place once every five years.
That’s when Debbie, who has been the county council’s Chief Executive since November 2012, put her hand up and volunteered to take on the task.
Debbie said: “I ran the Bournemouth half marathon for SafeWise last year and really enjoyed getting fit but it’s been a huge step to be fit enough for the marathon.
“I’ve really enjoyed my training and, although it’s been tough at times, I’ve had fantastic support from my family, friends and colleagues. People have given me lots of tips and have very kindly started to sponsor me ready for the big day.”
As well as being a board member of the charity – which offers education to people of all ages on how to stay safe and healthy at home, on the roads or at play – Debbie is also a mother of two school-age boys.
She said: “I know we all want our children to grow up being aware of the risks and being able to keep themselves safe. These centres offer that vital advice and education in a fun, interactive and realistic way.
“I’m proud to be pounding the streets of London for SafeWise and I’m aiming to raise as much as I can for this very worthwhile charity.”
