What we do
SafeWise Weymouth is an experiential safety, health, citizenship and life skills education centre featuring a full size outdoor street scene with working pedestrian crossings, a series of realistic fire and home safety scenarios, and exciting plans for future development. We teach visitors of all ages a wide range of skills for life such as fire, water, home, road and travel safety, health, crime, internet safety, bullying and mental wellbeing. These life skills are often marginalised in our education system, but we think they are as important as literacy and maths.
Situated alongside Weymouth Fire Station, SafeWise Weymouth is also a popular community hub with a cafe and bookable facilities hosting a wide range of local groups, leisure activities, training and business meetings.
What we believe
Our philosophy is that every visitor should experience a fun and immersive learning environment in which they ‘discuss, decide and do’, rather than simply listening and being told. Talk, decision-making and practical activity in our realistic scenarios deliver memorable learning and motivate visitors in a way that is difficult to replicate in a classroom.
What we are looking for
We are seeking an outstanding leader and project manager to lead our centre into an exciting new phase, ideally with some background in education or visitor centre management. You will motivate and lead the staff team and volunteer Visitor Guides, so the ability to connect with adults is as important as your skills with young people. You will grow positive local partnerships to support the centre, so you need to be an impressive communicator. You will work imaginatively to maximise use of the centre by local business and the community and keep the facilities in tip top condition. You will be enthusiastically supported by our new Chief Executive, Education Officer and Centre Co-ordinator, as well as a growing Central team, to build our audiences, our impact, and the income to support our essential work.
The detailed bit
We’d like our new manager to start in January 2018, or as soon as possible, although we will wait for the right candidate. This is a full time post, based at SafeWise Weymouth but with regular travel to our other centres in Bournemouth and Swindon, and elsewhere on occasions. The postholder must be willing to work out of hours from time to time. Salary dependent on experience. We are open to job share for the right candidates.
