What we do
SafeWise is a charity which runs experiential safety, health, citizenship and life skills education centres in Bournemouth and Weymouth, with a third centre planned for Swindon/Wiltshire in 2019. These centres feature full size scenarios such as streets, pedestrian crossings, buses, trains, fire and home safety scenarios, with exciting plans for future development. We teach visitors of all ages a wide range of skills for life such as fire, water, home, road and travel safety, health, crime, internet safety, bullying and mental wellbeing. These skills for life are often marginalised in our education system, but we think they are as important as literacy and maths.
During 2018, we will be re-designing programmes at both our centres, and introducing visitor charging for this valuable educational experience. In November, we will be celebrating our first 20 years.
What we believe
Our philosophy is that every visitor should experience a fun and immersive learning environment in which they ‘discuss, decide and do’, rather than simply listening and being told. Talk, decision-making and practical activity in our realistic scenarios deliver memorable learning and motivate visitors in a way that is difficult to replicate in a classroom.
What we are looking for
Overall, we want to double our visitor numbers within three years. We are seeking an imaginative marketing and communications professional to achieve several things towards this goal. Firstly, we are rebranding. This process has already begun, but we’d like our new manager to complete the process and implement the rebrand in April 2018. Alongside this, we are redesigning our primary school programme to increase relevance and impact. Our Communications Manager will need to successfully promote the new tour to schools in particular, at the same time as introducing the concept of a charge per pupil, to make the charity more sustainable, from September 2018. Our 20th birthday in November is a fabulous opportunity to further promote the charity and our ambitious plans for the future. In the long term, you will work to sustain high visitor numbers, promote new programmes to new audiences and manage a successful public profile and brand.
The detailed bit
We’d like our new Communications Manager to start as soon as possible, although we will wait for the right candidate. This is a part time post of a flexible 21 hours a week around core hours and job requirements. It is a one year contract in the first instance with the intention to extend depending on income generation. You would be based at SafeWise HQ in Bournemouth but with regular travel to our other centre in Weymouth and for meetings about our new centre in Swindon/Wiltshire, and elsewhere on occasions. The postholder must be willing to work out of hours from time to time. Salary dependent on experience. This post is not currently suited to job share.
